A Step-by-Step Guide to Meditation with Mala Beads

Introduction

Initially, a very new and unfamiliar devotee of meditation who has not come across mala beads may seem a little abstract at the thought of having to string 108 beads and then tie them to his meditative experience. A more clear step-wise approach could change it all. Instead of making things into guesswork and uncertainty in the long loose string of mala beads that you are about to meditate with, it can become confident, structured steps in introducing mala beads into your meditation practice. It details every stage from preparing your space and mind to holding and moving along the beads, applying the breath along with the repetition, and thus ending your session with grace.

Preparing Your Space and Mind

It is important to ensure both your external setting and your internal state are ready for meditation before touching the mala itself.

1.

Locate a Quiet Spot: Discover a secluded corner of the house where you can find your meditation space: a secret meditation corner in your home, a quiet room, or even an open-air corner where there is peace and quiet. The key is that this should feel secure and welcoming.

2.

Create a Calm Environment: Dim the lights or use natural light wherever possible. You might light a candle or incense, and have a cushion or yoga mat on the floor. Gentle background music or nature sounds could help you settle in.

3.

Set an Intention: Ask yourself: What do I want from this practice? It could be something along the lines of cultivating inner peace, perhaps some clarity, or even as simple as learning to be kinder to yourself. Set that intention silently in your mind. A simple step like that makes your meditation for a reason and direction.

4.

Relax the Body: Sit on a cushion or chair, spine straight, but not rigid, shoulders relaxed, jaw unclenched, and take some deep breaths in through the nose and out slowly through the mouth.
